After a split in singles play, the Blue Springs boys tennis team dropped two of three doubles matches to suffer a tough loss Wednesday.

The Excelsior Springs Tigers downed the Wildcats 5-4 at Baumgardner Park.

After a 10-7 comeback win by the No. 1 doubles team of Mitchell Wilhoit and Sam Phillips, the Wildcats fell 10-6 and 10-1 in No. 2 and 3 doubles.

“(They) were down 1-6 and came back and won 10-7,” Wildcats coach Jody McClain said of Wilhoit and Phillips. “They played with a lot of determination and experience.”

Phillips, Spenser Morgan and Jordan Young won in singles, but the Wildcats suffered a pair of close 10-8 losses to make it 3-3 entering doubles play.

“(We) lost four out of six varsity (from last year), so we are a young team,” McClain said. “Excelsior had returned every one of their players this year.”
