    To the editor:
As my 12 years on the Independence school board come to an end, I want to say thank you to the citizens of Independence for entrusting me with the education of our children and future of our community. It has been a privilege to serve with outstanding educators, parents, civic leaders and fellow board members.
Together we raised the expectations for rigor, relevance and relationships in education and continue to provide the tools with which to achieve higher results. I am proud of our community for approving an $85 million bond issue that allowed the school district to build two new elementary schools and make substantial improvements to all our facilities.
Looking forward, I am most encouraged with the spirit of cooperation and positive energy as administrators, teachers and school board members work together for our children. Our district believes every child can learn and will do anything in our power to make sure that happens. Superintendent Jim Hinson reached out to partner with our city and businesses. Superintendent Dale Herl is adding to those partnerships to provide challenging and relevant educational opportunities to prepare our students for the workforce and a successful future. Herl is leading our district to make data-driven decisions that translate into more effective teaching.
You will have the opportunity to vote for two school board members on April 8. I believe Denise Fears and Blake Roberson will most effectively serve our community giving thoughtful, objective and informed leadership to our school district. After 12 years of service, I am even more convinced that public education with locally elected school board members is the most effective and comprehensive way to provide quality education for all children. I encourage you to vote for your school board members and work with your school leaders for the best education for our children. Thank you.
