To the editor:

Regarding our upcoming mayoral election, one candidate’s qualifications stand out. Jim Schultz has proven he has the leadership experience needed to be our next mayor. During the past four years while serving as mayor pro tem, Jim has gained valuable experience in leading Independence, all the while cultivating long-term relationships within the community and the metropolitan area, relationships required to improve Independence and move our city forward. He has done so with honesty, integrity and mutual respect, creating an atmosphere of trust and a culture of cooperation, essential traits of a dynamic leader.

During his 12 years as an at-large council member, representing all of Independence, Jim has worked tirelessly to improve our city. He has represented us in advocating for street improvements, infrastructure improvements, a premiere entertainment venue (the Independence Events Center) and a public transit system (IndeBus). Recreation complexes have been created and our parks improved. Opportunities have been created for new businesses, and our seniors have a center that caters to their needs. Along with his council responsibilities, Jim has physically given his time to improve our schools and has been a leader in advocating for the less fortunate, the homeless and hungry, within our community.

While it is commendable that a person would oppose Jim as a candidate for mayor, one must consider the experience required to adequately represent our great city as the next mayor. Jim Schultz is the only candidate with the proven leadership experience to be the next mayor of Independence. I would encourage you to vote for Jim Schultz for mayor next Tuesday.
