  • Sandy Dennis elected president of GFWC Nu-Era Study Club

  • The GFWC Nu-Era Study Club, member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, met April 2 at Hillcrest Thirft Store in Lee’s Summit. Eileen McKee and Lisa Nichols served as co-hostesses and President Trish Shelton conducted the business meeting. The program, “One By One Project, Human Trafficking”, was presented by Andrea Shelton. Guests were members of the GFWC Achieving by Reading Club. Federation Day is April 24 and Arbor Day will be celebrated.
    Due to weather conditions, the March meeting had to be relocated to Big Biscuit in Blue Springs. The following new officers were elected for the 2014-2016 Biennium: Sandy Dennis, president; Gail Jones, 1st vice president; Robin Crick, 2nd vice president; Sue Hancock, recording secretary; Anna Mills, corresponding secretary; and Sharon Carlyle, treasurer. The new officers will be installed at the May meeting.
    The GFWC Second District Spring Conference will be held April 25 at Hickman Mills Community Christian Church. Gail Jones will be installed as corresponding secretary for the next Biennium. The program will be presented by Dr. Raymond Feener, outstanding baritone singer. The club treasurer will be collecting money for reservations at the meeting.
    The April service project will be working on Harvesters Mail Carriers Food Drive from 9 a.m. to noon April 25 at the home of Sandy Dennis. Past service projects have included 17 members putting together 360 Care Kits on Feb. 27 for Heart to Heart International. On March 17, 15 members finished up 250 No No Arm Bands, 61 gowns and 25 blankets for Operation Smile.
    The Club is very proud to have two members that will be installed at the May 2 GFWC of Missouri State Convention in Columbia: Kathy Palermo will be installed as president, and Trish Shelton as recording secretary for the 2014-2016 Biennium. Second District will be hosting the May 1 luncheon, and Rory Rowland, an inspirational speaker from Independence, will be the guest speaker. The President’s breakfast will be hosted by Kathy and Trish’s three GFWC Clubs: Beverly Shelton Girls Town Club and the Nu-Era Study Club in Independence, and the Achieving by Reading Club in Lee’s Summit. Beverly Shelton, past state president, will preside. June Kisker from the Platte City Study Club has contributed her time and expert talents to help with the centerpieces, programs, gifts, etc.
