Independence Police have charged a man suspected of tampering with motor vehicles and thefts.
According to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, Kevin W. Harris, 27, was charged Friday with five counts of tampering with a motor vehicle and four counts of theft in connection with several recent reports of vehicle break-ins in Independence.
Most break-ins occurred in the vicinity of 42nd Street in Independence over a three and a half week period that started in late March.
Court records say Harris broke into several vehicles, damaging some in the process, and took tools, equipment and other valuables, such as computers and other electronics, from them.
The Jackson County Prosecutor says when Harris was taken into custody, he told police that he had committed two dozen larcenies in Independence. He also had several of the stolen items in his vehicle.
Police also said their investigation revealed a second suspect involved in the alleged crimes and that charges may soon be filed against that person.
Harris’s bond has been set at $150,000 secured.
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of theft from their automobile in Independence, is asked to contact the Independence Police Investigative Division at 816-325-7330 to see if any of the stolen items have been recovered.
