  • After a tough loss Friday, Blue Springs South girls soccer coach Todd Findley was happy how his team responded Saturday.
A goal in each half lifted the Jaguars to a 2-1 victory over host Columbia Hickman after a 2-0 loss to Columbia Rock Bridge on Friday.
Nina Stine finished off a through ball from Mollie Maupin in the 23rd minute to give South a 1-0 lead. Kayla Ellis then lofted a shot over the Hickman goalkeeper off a Stine corner kick in the 72nd minute to make it 2-0.
Hickman scored with two minutes left to spoil goalkeeper Megan Swanson’s shutout, but the Jaguars held on to improve to 4-2 overall.
“We played much stronger and faster than Friday,” Findley said. “I challenged the girls to start better and to force the pace of the game, and they succeeded.
“Due to the heat and two tough games, we were able to play a very deep bench, and I’m proud of our efforts. Both games were a preview of the district that we will host this year. I didn’t want to overstress the importance of the wins, but they will be a factor for district seeding. I really just wanted to see how we would perform this early in the year against two very good, yet unfamiliar, teams. We did learn some lessons in work rate and speed of play that we hope will benefit us getting back to the difficult conference schedule.”
