It was a special Wednesday afternoon for Blue Springs South seniors Thomas Abarca, Angelica Camareno, Caleb Humphreys and Halan Mann as they signed national letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.
Abarca will play basketball at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo.; Camareno will play volleyball at MCC-Longview in Lee’s Summit; Humphreys will play baseball at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Okla.; and Mann will play volleyball at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo.
Abarca will rejoin his backcourt teammate from South, Andrew Wright, at Central Methodist.
“It was important for me to go somewhere where I felt comfortable and knew some people, and Andrew and I have been neighbors and played basketball together for years,” Abarca said. “When I visited Central Methodist's campus I knew that's where I wanted to go – and Andrew has told me great things about the school and the basketball program.”
Mann said Stephens College's veterinary program played a big role in her decision.
“I am going to be a vet, and they have a great program,” Mann said. “I love the campus – it's just the right size – and Columbia is a great town. I felt comfortable with the girls on the team, and I like the coach. I think it's going to be a perfect fit for me.”
Humphreys, who has been an anchor for the South baseball team, is excited about taking his game to the next level.
“This is just an amazing opportunity for me, and I was so excited when I got contacted by the coaches at Northeastern Oklahoma,” Humphreys said. “It's nice to have this all taken care of because this could be a special season for our baseball team, and I don't have to concern myself with recruiting now that I know where I'm going to college.”
Camareno said that Longview provides everything she is looking for in a college program.
“I'm part of the A+ program, so school is going to be very affordable,” she said. “And Longview has a great program, it's close to home and I can work on my game over the next two years to see if I can go on and play for a bigger school.
“And that's really exciting.”
