• Mike Calvert discusses military headstones

  • The Jackson County Genealogy Society will meet at 7 p.m. May 1 at the Truman Depot, 1111 W. Pacific Ave., just south of the Community of Christ Auditorium in Independence.
    Their guest speaker will be Mike Calvert, who currently serves as president of the Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri, chairman of the Independence Commission on Historic Preservation and is a member of the board of directors for the National Frontier Trails Museum. He will speak on military headstones.
    Have you ever found yourself in a cemetery looking at your great-grandfather or great-great-uncle’s military headstone, hoping to discover his death date and it’s not there? Come spend an evening with Calvert and learn the history of how to decipher the information contained on a government issued military headstone.
