After a strong showing in the Mike VanBecelaere Memorial Invitational last Saturday, the Lee’s Summit North boys tennis team opened Suburban Big Six play with a win.
After completing the tournament Saturday, the Broncos won four of the five singles matches completed on the way to a 6-1 victory over Raymore-Peculiar. Weather ended the match early.
“Wild finish to a wild day,” Broncos coach Stu Reece said. “During the tournament we dodged a rain storm, a brief hail storm, had times of sun, rain, wind, cold and then finally our luck ran out with a strong downpour during our dual with Ray-Pec and had to end early. It was nice to get the conference season started with a victory.”
Jimmy Bertken (10-5), Jake Handley (10-5), Ryan Eckmann (10-5) and Austin Kuklenski (10-1) won in singles. Bertken and Handley won at No. 1 doubles and Thomas Faulkenberry and Eckmann won at No. 2.
North finished second to rival Lee’s Summit West in the tournament earlier in the day. The Broncos totaled 36 points to finish three behind West in the all-doubles event. Grain Valley (26) took fourth, Fort Osage (3) was seventh and Truman (1) eighth.
Jimmy Bertken and Jake Handley took third in A flight, Thomas Faulkenberry and Ryan Eckmann finished second in B flight, Lance Lanier and Diego SanMiguel were fourth in C flight and Seth Templeman and Jacob Welsh won D flight for the Broncos.
Grain Valley’s Chase Timmons and Dayton Thurn finished second in C flight, falling 8-5 to Kamal Fulghem and Will Marko of Lee’s Summit West in the final. Grain Valley’s Cody Zeigler and Chris Eubank finished fourth in A flight, falling 8-4 to Bertken and Handley in the third-place match.
Fort Osage’s Tyler Smith and Jared Branstetter finished seventh in A flight, beating Truman’s Sam Heacock and Jewlian Cordry 8-6 in the seventh-place match.
