  • Cancer Battler Cup V set for Thursday

    Cancer Battler Cup V will center around Thursday’s Blue Springs at Blue Springs South girls soccer game at South’s Larry Stewart Memorial Stadium.
    CBC V is community event hosted by the Blue Springs High School Soccer Alumni Association that will benefit the Jennifer Ireland Foundation. Ireland was a soccer player and manager at Blue Springs who died of colon cancer in 2007 at age 27.
    In the next two weeks, a signature banner will tour Blue Springs, giving people an opportunity to sign the banner in honor of those currently battling cancer or those who have in the past.
    Associated fundraisers include:
    • Tickets for May 14 Sporting KC game at Sporting Park are available for $25, with $6 of each ticket going to CBC V. Contact Please contact Robert Rusert at bshssocceralumni@hotmail.com for tickets.
    • The Blue Springs Chick-Fil-A location on Coronado Drive off of Adams Dairy Parkway will host a Community Week fundraiser to support CBC V. The two high schools will battle to raise the most money for CBC V.
    Players from local soccer clubs will gain free admittance to Thursday’s game by wearing a jersey. Soccer skill contests will be held, along with a silent auction. Players from FC Kansas City will sign autographs until 7:30 p.m. Subsequently, the May 18 FCKC match will be BSHS & BSSHS day at FCKC, with a portion of ticket sales going to the Jennifer Ireland Foundation.
    In addition, at halftime of CBC V, a 15-minute game between local club soccer coaches and Blue Springs and BS South Alumni will take place featuring former Kansas City Wizard Nick Garcia and coaches from FC Kansas City, Futura FC, Alba FC, Summit Soccer Club and others.
