An Independence man pleaded guilty in a Ray County court Wednesday to killing his brother in Carrollton, Mo., in 2011 and will spend the rest of his life in prison.
David L. Womack, 49, of Independence pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action and was sentenced to life in prison by Ray County Judge David Miller. He also pleaded guilty to armed criminal action and was sentenced to 15 years, which he will serve concurrently.
Womack had been scheduled for a jury trial on June 27. Several hearings had been delayed and rescheduled in the case, which was transferred from Carroll County to Ray County. Jury trials also had been scheduled in 2012 and 2013 but had been delayed.
Womack shot his brother, Bill Womack, outside of their mother’s home in Carrollton on Jan. 4, 2011. Bill Womack, 58, also of Independence, was checking on their mother, who had been upset about David’s alleged domestic violence rampage on his girlfriend prior to the shooting.
Womack was apprehended in eastern Independence near Blue Springs later on Jan. 4 after leading police on a high-speed chase.
