  • An Independence man will spend 15 years in prison for the death of his own baby daughter in Bates City last year.
A Lafayette County judge sentenced Alex A. Gilbert, 25, of Independence, to 15 years in state prison for the abuse and death of his 10-week-old daughter, Brenlee Gilbert in May 2013.
After initially pleading not guilty to second-degree murder, Gilbert pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter on March 17. He received the maximum of 15 years for voluntary manslaughter.
The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office said the baby died of a skull fracture, brain damage and numerous broken bones. The autopsy showed that the final cause of death was abusive head trauma, which indicated both severe shaking and blunt force trauma.
Police were called to a home on Linn Road in Bates City on May 17, 2013, and found the baby unresponsive and turning blue. The girl was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs before being transferred to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, where she was placed on life support. After learning she was brain dead, the infant was taken off life support after family members had a chance to say their goodbyes, and she was declared dead on May 20, 2013.
According to a Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office press release, when Gilbert appeared before Judge Dennis Rolf at his sentencing, he said he was ready to take responsibility and said, “I did a heinous thing, I took a life.”
