An Independence woman faces charges in the death of her child that allegedly resulted from neglect, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Friday.

Deshelle "DF" Atkison, 31, of Independence, was charged with abuse or neglect of a child and an endangering the welfare of a child.

Atkison’s 6-month-old child was found dead in a home on the 800 block of South Park Avenue in Independence on Jan. 31, according to court documents. When Independence Police arrived at the scene, they discovered a non-breathing infant and “filthy and unsanitary” conditions in the home. The infant victim was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s office ruled the death as a homicide on March 31. The cause was pneumonia due to severe malnutrition and neglect.

Prosecutors have requested a bond of $100,000 for Atkison and asked that she be allowed no contact with children under 17.
