During the Lunch ‘N Learn program from noon to 1 p.m. May 14 at the Truman Memorial Building, 416 W. Maple Ave., in Independence, Mike Calvert, president of the Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri, will discuss the urban fight between Major Gen. Sterling Price’s Confederates and Major Gen. Alfred Pleasonton’s Federals.
Victory and defeat; defeat and victory describes the three days of battles stretching from eastern Independence to western Kansas City. Sandwiched between the Battle of the Little Blue and the Battle of Westport, the Second Battle of Independence on Oct. 22, 1864, is often times forgotten. Come and retrace the steps of the Union and Confederate soldiers as they fight each other on the streets of Independence.
