Graduation day can unleash all sorts of emotions – joy and relief about moving on from on high school and perhaps hometown, excitement and anxiety about the future and perhaps some sadness knowing there’s some classmates you’ll never see again.
For Blue Springs High School graduate Mackenzie Walls, the mix of emotions started a few days before Sunday. The moment hit her the last day of school, she said.
“You realize you’ll never see these people again,” Walls said as she stood next to the stage after Blue Springs’ graduation ceremony at Municipal Auditorium. “I’m happy to be done, but also you’ll never see some close people again.
What she’ll remember most about the ceremony and happy chaos afterwards is getting to see many of those classmates one last time.
“I’ve been trying to find a bunch of people,” she said.
For her friend Darrius Shepherd, the moment and Sunday’s scene was created a “surreal” feeling.
“You’re ready for this chapter to close, but you’re glad to move on to the future,” said Shepherd, who has accepted a football scholarship to North Dakota State and leaves for there June 13. “It’s summertime and college is about to happen, so it’s time to move on.”
Walls and Shepherd are among a listed graduating class of 461, one that has been awarded in $6.5 million scholarship money, up from last year’s previous post-split record of $6.3 million.
Class speaker Lyric Davis reminded her classmates not to sell themselves short of their own unique values, and fellow speaker Samuel Moore compared living one’s post-graduation life to the perfect selfie. The right photo of yourself needs to be in the right setting, project a good image to others and be the best out of however many you try to take.
