A life size dummy of President Barack Obama wearing something that “appeared suspicious” was found hanging from an Interstate 70 bridge overpass in an area between Grain Valley and Oak Grove Monday morning.

Sgt. Ronda Montgomery of Jackson County Sheriff wrote in an e-mail correspondence that the Sheriff’s Office received a call from someone driving on I-70 and noticed something hanging from the bridge around 5:30 a.m.

Once deputies arrived at the overpass and pulled the life-size figure bearing a rubber mask of President Obama onto the bridge, they found something that appeared to be suspicious and that could possibly have been an explosive device, according to Montgomery.

Jackson County Sheriff requested Independence Police’s bomb squad to assist with the suspicious finding. Grain Valley and Oak Grove Police briefly closed both eastbound and westbound I-70 while authorities moved the dummy from the bridge overpass to the north side of the highway.

The bomb squad determined there were no explosive devices involved.

Jackson County Sheriff did not release images of the dummy, as they are considered evidentiary, wrote Montgomery.

No suspects are in custody and the investigation is still ongoing.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is requesting anyone with information related to the case to call 816-524-4302 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
