SPRINGFIELD – Paul Province had his chances but ultimately settled for fourth place Saturday in the Class 2 state singles tournament at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
In the morning semifinals the Blue Springs South senior lost 6-1, 6-1 to Rockhurst’s Alex Koch (who later won the state title). In the third-place match against Chaminade’s Trevor Allen, Province dropped a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) decision.
Province (27-5) had a chance to win each set in the third-place bout. He held a 5-4, 40-love lead before Allen rallied in the first set, then fought off three match points and went up 6-5 on serve in the second.
“He played good today,” South coach Nathan Mooney said. “It was unfortunate he lost his last match, but Allen played just good enough to win. It was an incredible weekend that Paul and his family will never forget.
“Paul had a good draw and took advantage of it.”
On Friday, Province beat Joplin’s Luke Frogge 7-5, 6-2 and Parkway Central’s Jacob Kanter 6-1, 6-1 in the first two rounds.
GRAIN VALLEY DUO EIGHTH: Grain Valley’s doubles team of Cody Zeigler and James Eubank dropped both matches Saturday to finish in eighth place in the Class 1 state doubles tournament.
In the consolation semifinals they fell 6-1, 6-2 to Pembroke Hill brothers Noah and Josh Bortnick. In the seventh-place bout Clayton’s Joshua Lee and Adam Rangwala claimed a 6-4, 6-0 win.
