  • Police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection to a street robbery that took place in the area of 23rd Street and Westport Road near Hill Park in eastern Independence May 15.
Weldy J. Espinoza, 18, of Independence, was arrested and charged Wednesday with robbery and armed criminal action.
On May 29, information led investigators to identify Espinoza as a person of interest in the May 15 robbery near Hill Park.
Also during the week of May 25, Independence Police identified three persons of interest in a string of five street robberies that spanned from May 18 to 22 throughout Independence. Devonte Prendergast, 19, Deondre Prendergast, 20 and Jessica Coleman, 21, all of Kansas City, were found and each charged with multiple counts of robbery and armed criminal action after a standoff with police in Kansas City May 29. Independence Public Information Officer Tom Gentry said Espinoza was not part of the three-member group and that the May 15 robbery was a separate incident.
Espinoza’s bond has been set at $200,000 with 10 percent secured.
