  • Late rally lifts Fike in tourney opener

  • Blue Springs Post 499 Fike got off to a strong start in the Mountain Home (Ark.) American Legion Baseball Tournament Wednesday.
    Fike scored seven runs in the final two innings to break a 5-5 deadlock and down Eureka (Mo.) 12-5 in the tournament opener.
    Zach Ehlen had just one hit but drove in a team-high three runs, stole two bases and scored two runs to spark Post 499, which broke the tie with one run in the top of the sixth and six runs in the seventh.
    Nic Mertes had a hit and two RBIs, Cale Benson, Garrett Phillips and Blake Roberts each had two hits and an RBI and Tanner Lucas doubled to help lift Fike (3-1).
    Andrew Olsen claimed the victory, pitching 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief after replacing Alex Smith.
    Fike scored one in the first and two runs in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead, but Eureka tied it with three in the bottom of the third. Both teams scored two runs in the fourth.
    BLUE SPRINGS ROD’S SPORTS A’S 12, SEDALIA POST 642 TRAVELERS 4: The Blue Springs Rod’s Sports Athletics scored seven runs in the first two innings and went on to rout the Sedalia Post 642 Travelers in the first game of a Zone 2 East doubleheader at Sedalia’s Liberty Park Stadium.
    David Stober led the way for the A’s, going 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. He also pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief of winning starter Corbin Hare.
    The A’s collected 15 hits to improve to 11-1 overall and 1-0 in Zone 2 East play. The Travelers fell to 6-5 and 0-1.
    Hare and Jared Lafal each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Jeremy Lufft and Dillon Jackson each added two hits and an RBI and Brandon Bennefeld had two hits and two runs scored to help spark the A’s.
