  • A package found Tuesday outside the Independence Health Department reported as suspicious turned out to be harmless.
Independence police and its explosives unit robot were called to the Health Department on South Liberty Street about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when a black and blue cloth bag was found outside just south of the main entrance. After closing off Liberty Street from Pacific Avenue to just north of the building, police deployed the robot, which emptied out the contents on the walkway.
Independence police spokesperson Tom Gentry said the contents turned out to be mostly clothing and was not considered dangerous.
