Jackson County is offering what’s described as a safe and drug-free music event this evening for the area’s youth.

It’s the MyARTS Battle of the Bands, starting at 6 p.m. at the MyARTS facility on Main Street north of Truman Road, just off the Square. It’s free.

Attendees can meet with the MyARTS staff and tour the facility to see work being done there.

There are 11 music acts. The county prosecutor’s office, which runs MyARTS, calls it “a positive outlet for creative expression through music.” Sponsors are offering enough food for 100 or more attendees.

There are prizes for the competitors: First place is 10 hours of recording time, 10 demo CD pressings at Chapman Studios, and a record release party at Vinyl Renaissance. The second-place prize is 10 hours of recording at Destiny Studios, and third is a $150 gift certificate to Music Gear on the Square.

A rock band from Lawrence, 3 Son Green, is to give an opening concert, and the prosecutor’s office says recording studio talent scouts wlll be on hand.
