Jackson County is planning a Fourth of July event with what is billed as the largest fireworks finale in the Midwest.
The gates open for “The Big Bang” at 5:30 p.m. Friday. It’s at shelter No. 13 at Longview Lake, 11101 Raytown Road. There will be parachutists and live music by Backroad Anthem. There will be a salute to veterans and active-duty military personnel, including several World War II veterans on the stage. Fireworks begin after dark.
“Looks like it’s going to be 85 degrees and sunny,” County Executive Mike Sanders said Monday.
The event, including parking, is free, but Sanders suggested donations to Operation Stand Down, which aids homeless veterans. The group will have a tent near the stage and accept donations such as toothpaste, deodorant and shaving cream.
Sanders said the event drew 15,000 people last year, and 20,000 are expected this year. “We can accommodate double that,” he said.
