  • Pirates ease past Bears

  • The Lee’s Summit Post 189 Pirates crept closer to .500 with Tuesday’s Zone 2 West doubleheader sweep of the Independence VFW Post 1000 Bears at Legacy Park. The Pirates won 13-6 and 8-0.
    Dillon Howell was the winning pitcher in the first game, and Quinton Lewis powered the Pirates (14-16 overall, 11-7 zone) with a triple and single. John Pumphrey pitched a complete game in the nightcap, and Howell stroked two hits.
    The Pirates split a Friday doubleheader with Sedalia Post 642 and beat St. Joseph Post 11 once Saturday before the second game was rained out.
    The Bears fell to 6-21 and 2-14.
    LEE’S SUMMIT OUTLAWS 11-12, INDEPENDENCE VFW POST 1000 BEARS 0-1: The Outlaws maintained a firm grip on the American Legion Zone 2 East standings with Monday’s easy sweep at Crysler Stadium.
    The Outlaws improved to 22-11 and 12-4.
    Alec Shuler spaced four hits to win the opening game on the mound. Blake Bruning singled three times and Seto Soto and Quentin Bradford each singled twice and drove in two runs in leading the attack. The Outlaws scored four runs in the second inning and seven in the fourth. Jake Ferrell took the loss for the Bears.
    Brian Conrow pitched a two-hitter in the second game. Soto slugged two home runs and singled for three RBIs and three runs scored. Blake Bruning had two singles, a double and one RBI and Dalton Woods a single, triple and RBI. A nine-run second inning sealed the Outlaws victory.
