  • Tennies for Kids pairing shoes with students

  • The annual Tennies for Kids program is on its way – but still looking for help – toward its goal of providing new shoes for at least 1,000 local children by the time school starts.
“So we’re doing well. We’re on a roll,” said organizer Betty Snapp.
This program this year is getting help from the Coalition of Women Helping Children, a volunteer group supporting programs that the Community Services League provides children.
Again this year, the goal of the Tennies for Kids program is to collect 1,000 pair of shoes, or its equivalent, figured at $10,000. As of this week, Snapp said, the program was at about 720 pair.
The shoes are distributed at the Community Services League’s back-to-school event in early August.
Several civic groups – the Young Matrons, the Women’s Civic Club, the Mid-town Optimists – have made donations, as have individuals, and local churches also help out by collecting shoes.
“We’ve still got a few churches that have not turned in their shoes yet,” Snapp said.
The Blue Springs office of the Community Services League also is getting involved this year, Snapp said.
Organizers have reached out to local restaurants and others to help out with fundraising:
    • Perkins on Bolger Road will have a dine-and-donate event all day July 24.
    • Papa Murphy’s on 23rd Street in Independence is having an event from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. July 31.
    • La Fuente on Missouri 291 will have a dine-and-donate event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 4.
    • Organizers plan a second annual “Chic and Cent-sible” fashion show and brunch at 10 a.m. Aug. 23 at the Holiday Inn in Independence. Tickets are $40 and benefit Community Services League children’s programs. Models will wear fashions that have been purchased at a flea market or thirftstore, with the entire outfit costing less than $100. For tickets, contact Dena Morrison at the Independence Community Services League office, 816-254-4100.
Donations of shoes or money also can be taken to the Community Service’s League’s main office at 404 N. Noland Road, Independence. Or call 816-912-4484. Donations are being taken through Aug. 1. Please indicate that the donations are for Tennies for Kids.
