Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, except those In Murrieta, California, who blocked buses carrying immigrant mothers and children to their city for processing and deportation hearings. One Murrieta citizen even spat on a counter-protester, thus spitting on American values and that 14-line poem – “The New Colossus,” by Emma Lazarus – that adorns the Statue of Liberty.
The government reports that since October more than 52,100 children, traveling without an adult, were caught entering the United States through Mexico from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico. Families are sending their children here to escape gangs, drugs, crime and poverty. Further, adults from Mexican are often immediately deported.
While it is a nightmare for the Border Patrol, it has become a partisan political football. Fact: President Obama has allowed undocumented child immigrants to stay and work. The uninformed far-right Republicans were quick to criticize him, even calling for his impeachment. The din stopped when they were informed that President George W. Bush signed into law in 2008 the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act. It had provisions for unaccompanied illegal immigrants under age 18 that read, “The U.S. Health and Human Services Department is to provide for their custody and care while deportation hearings are under way. The department is to attempt to find a parent or a sponsor in the United States while providing free legal representation and a child advocate.”
President Obama was following that law. Further, his admistration has currently deported more than 2.1 million immigrants surpassing the 1.6 million Bush deported during his entire term in office. The dissatisfied left has called Obama the “deporter-in-chief.”
While Murrieta blocks buses other cities such as El Centro, California, Nogales, Arizona and several Texas border towns have not.
Even media moguls Bill O’Reilly and Laura Ingraham engaged in an on-air heated debate. Ingraham wants to immediately deport entire families and by the thousands. O’Reilly said if that happened it would be the end of the Republican Party.
This inflamed issue is still current but maybe soon it will ebb away like all those brave Cubans who took advantage of the 1995 Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966. It protects anyone who flees Cuba and gets into the United States. It then allows them to pursue residency a year later.
I give you President John Adams’ toast: Independence forever.
