An Independence man shot by a resident during a home invasion Wednesday now faces a felony charge.

Jacob M. Kleckner, 30, was charged with first-degree burglary Thursday in the home invasion attempt at about 4 a.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of McHenry Street in northeast Independence. Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Twila Rigby set Kleckner’s bond at $20,000 with 10 percent secured.

The Independence Police Department says Kleckner allegedly broke into the home through the front door early Wednesday morning.

“At some point, there was a confrontation between him and the homeowner,” said IPD spokesman Tom Gentry.

The homeowner fired several shots at the intruder, wounding him. Kleckner fled the home, and then a neighbor took the alleged intruder to the hospital, where he was reported to have non-life-threatening wounds.

Kleckner remains hospitalized recovering from the gunshot wounds.
