Walkies on the Square

You can bring your dog up to the Independence Square next week for a sidewalk sale, a hot dog eating contest and the free Moonlight Movie.

It’s being billed as the Dog Days of Summer. From Thursday through Saturday you can bring your dog with you for some doggie-friendly shopping at the sidewalk sale. It’s all day until 6 p.m.

On Thursday UpDog is holding its hot dog eating contest. It’s a benefit for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City. The contest starts at 7:30 p.m. If you want to be a contestant you can register online at www.eatupdog.com/contest  or visit the restaurant at 114 N. Liberty St. to sign up in person.

The activities actually start at 6 p.m. And the contest is followed by the MoonLight Movie, which is “The Nut Job.”

Family Fun Day at Trails Museum

The National Frontier Trails Museum is having another Family Fun Day next Saturday, sponsored by the Friends of NFTM.

This one lets visitors experience a Civil War encampment, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You can meet Civil War soldiers and cavalry officers, learn about medicine, weapons,and living conditions during the war, and enjoy period music.

The history of the two Battles of Independence will be explained. And you can make a pretend bullet from a mold and write with a quill pen.

The outdoor activities are free. If you visit the museum, at regular admission fee, a free wagon ride is included. And the Chicago Alton Depot is open so you can learn about train travel.

The museum is at 318 W. Pacific Ave., Independence.

Go out on the fringe

The Kansas City Fringe Festival’s opening night is Thursday and it runs through July 27.

The festival is billed as a way to connect adventurous performers with adventurous audiences. There’s everything from youth theater to burlesque, performance and visual arts included, family friendly to outrageous.

Performances are at different times, dates and venues around Kansas City.

The opening night Fringe Walk and Fringe Teasers are free at the KC Rep. The Walk is at 5:30 and the teasers at 6:30 p.m..
