  • Local grads win athletic academic awards

  • A trio of University of Missouri athletes who are local high school graduates have been recognized by the Southeastern Conference for their academic success.
    Mackenzie Sykes, a senior on the Mizzou softball team and a Blue Springs High School graduate, and Ashtin Stephens, a redshirt sophomore for Mizzou softball from Blue Springs, were named to the 2014 Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll.
    To make the First Year Honor Roll, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, be a letter winner on scholarship or varsity member for two seasons or more, completed at least 24 hours of non-remedial credit and a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
    Blue Springs South graduate Julia Towler, a freshman volleyball player for Mizzou, was named to the 2014 SEC First Year Honor Roll.
    To make the First Year Honor Roll, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, be a letter winner on scholarship, completed 24 hours of non-remedial credit and a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
    MISSOURI VALLEY HONOR ROLL: Blue Springs grads Ibby Simcox, a sophomore swimmer for the Missouri State women’s team, and Bry Snow, a senior women’s basketball team player, have been named to the 2013-14 Missouri Valley Conference Honor Roll.
    Simcox was also selected for a Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award for having a grade point average of 3.5 or better for the previous two semesters, a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA and being a varsity team member. Honor roll recipients have a 3.2 GPA over the school year.
    Mackenzie Weis, a sophomore track and field member from Blue Springs and a Cass Midway graduate, also was named to the honor roll and won the Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award.
