To the editor:
Lowering the crime rate includes lowering the incidence of gun-related violence. As a descendant of a veteran of the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict and honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps myself during the Iranian hostage crisis, I joined Veterans for Responsible Solutions to combat gun-related violence, this is an organization of flag officers and enlisted veterans of all branches of the Armed Forces joined together to reduce gun-related violence.
Veterans for Responsible Solutions was founded by Capt. Mark Kelly of the United States Navy. It continually monitors Congress and accounts for votes pro and con for responsible solutions that will reduce gun-related violence.
In light of Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s injuries at the hand of a dangerously mentally ill man, I feel compelled to rid the streets of gun violence. I sincerely hope that history does not repeat itself. Veterans for Responsible Solutions does not intend to eliminate gun ownership in the United States, we advocate responsible gun ownership and measures that will ensure responsible gun ownership. These measures include expanded background checks to ensure that criminals and the dangerously mentally ill cannot legally own or purchase firearms. This measure alone may have prevented the Sandy Hook massacre as well as other isolated instances of gun violence in the United States.
