  • A's take advantage of errors for sweep

  • Independence Post 21 out-hit the Blue Springs Rod’s Sports A’s in both games Monday but came up one-run losers in both thanks to a shaky defense.
    Post 21 committed five errors in each game as the A’s won 3-2 and 6-5 in a non-league doubleheader at Crysler Stadium.
    Post 21 outhit the A’s 8-6 in the first game. Jeremy Lufft went six innings on the mound to get the win for the A’s, while Post 21’s Tanner Stone suffered the loss despite pitching a complete game. Lufft scattered seven hits and a walk and struck out six.
    David Stober pitched the seventh for the save. At the plate, Stober tripled and doubled and scored two runs. Kirk Finley also had two hits, and Jared Lafal’s RBI single in the fifth plated the eventual winning run.
    Nick Adrales and Justin Niccum (two RBIs) had two hits apiece for Post 21.
    Corbin Hare slugged a two-run homer in the sixth inning to erase a 5-4 deficit and win game two for the A’s 6-5. Hare went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Dillon Jackson had the only other two hits for the A’s (36-8), who capitalized on another five errors and 12 walks. Stober pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief of Alex VanZandt to earn the win.
    Adrales had three hits and two RBIs, Mitchell Herrick tripled and singled with an RBI, Matt Hughes added two hits and an RBI and Cody Gregory had an RBI double to lead Post 21, who fell to 12-25 overall. Miles Odom suffered the loss.
    BLUE SPRINGS POST 499 FIKE 4-9, LEE’S SUMMIT POST 189 PIRATES 0-4: Tanner Lucas pitched a four-hit shutout as Fike continued the momentum from its Wood Bat Invitational runner-up finish by taking the first game of Monday’s non-league doubleheader at Legacy Park 4-0.
    Fike (28-6) completed the sweep with a 9-4 win in the second game.
    Lucas struck out three and walked three, throwing 113 pitches in the first game. Derek Case had three hits and Blake Roberts (two RBIs) and Zack Ehlen (double, stolen base) two apiece for Fike.
    Dillon Howell had two hits for the Pirates, and Xavier Boerger took the loss in relief of Darren Clay.
    Roberts went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to power Fike in the second game and support winning pitcher Alex Smith. Nate Pecota, who allowed one unearned run in two innings for the save, Ehlen and Andrew Olsen each added two hits and an RBI.
    Nic Mertes added two hits, Garrett Phillips had an RBI double and Cale Benson had a hit and an RBI as Fike outhit the Pirates 15-5. Fike led 4-3 before erupting for five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

    Two four-run innings sparked the A’s to a 10-4 victory over Bellevue (Neb.) Post 339 East, as they finished 3-2 after not qualifying for the quarterfinals out of pool play.
    Jonathan Fink went the distance on a five-hitter for the victory. Lufft singled and doubled with an RBI, David Stober singled with two RBIs, Nate Carlton singled and doubled, Corbin Hare doubled and Ramon Rivera doubled with one RBI to power the A’s at the plate.
    In other results Saturday involving area teams, the Independence VFW Post 1000 Bears (6-30) fell 3-2 in eight innings to Overland Park (Kan.) Post 388; Independence Post 21 bowed 3-0 to Leavenworth (Kan.) Geiger Redi-Mix; the Lee’s Summit Post 189 Outlaws (27-17) lost Jefferson City Post 5 (score unavailable); and the Lee’s Summit Post 189 Pirates fell 8-4 to the Omaha (Neb.) Post 1 Vikings.
