Karen McWhirt of Lee’s Summit, and author of “Together We Will Win”, will sponsor the Great Balls of Fire 5K Run for Testicular Cancer through Ian’s Story, a Testicular Cancer Awareness organization she founded after her son lost his battle with the disease in 2005.
The run starts at 7:30 a.m. July 20 at 95th and Metcalf in Overland Park. The event is hosted by Sports Medicine Store at the race location. Registration is $35 for adults and $15 for the Kid’s Fun Run, and can be done online or on Race Day. Funds raised will be donated to the Testicular Cancer Society and The University of Kansas Cancer Center. The event website is www.greatballsoffirerun.com.
Since the death of her son, McWhirt continues her efforts to raise awareness of testicular cancer with her book and the music CD titled, “Something To Remember”, which Ian had recorded before his testicular cancer diagnosis, and by offering free literature and speaking presentations about testicular cancer. She donates all royalties to benefit cancer charity.
McWhirt offers a free CD with every book purchased, in honor of Ian’s wish to remind all young men about testicular cancer awareness. The book is available from the author’s websites, www.togetherwewillwin.net., and through all major online booksellers, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
