The South Summer Sand Volleyball League in Blue Springs completed its schedule last week. The tandems of Ashlyn Slater (Grain Valley) and Kira Wedel (Blue Springs South) and Emma Lock (Lee’s Summit) and Alicia Starr (Blue Springs) tied for the top winning percentage.

Slater and Wedel won 15 sets against 3 losses (teams always played three sets to 21 points in each match), while Lock and Starr went 10-2. Lock and Starr missed the Summer Sand Finals in order to participate in the 18U division of USA Volleyball Junior Beach regional tournament. They took first and advanced to national championships in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The South Sand League consisted of 32 teams, ranging from high school freshman to college athletes, with all matches at Centerline Beach Volleyball in Blue Springs. Matches were set up in a ladder format, meaning a team would move up to a more challenging pool if it continued to win.

The team of Halan Mann (Stephens College) and Angelica Camareno (MCC-Longview) finished first in the Open Pool, followed by Blue Springs South tandems Jenna Rau/K.K. Stoudemire and Erica Mason/Sydney Sinclair.

Liberty’s Dominique Lipari and Mackenzie Rieth won the Gold Pool, followed by Grain Valley’s Tori Squiers and Megan Todd and Summit Christian’s Keeli Shearer and Savvy Hughes. Shearer and Hughes had the third-best winning percentage at 11-4.

South’s Courtney Foudree and Shannon Hatt won the Silver Pool, Slater and Wedel won the Bronze Pool and Pleasant Hill’s Regan and Logan Gish claimed the Copper Pool.
