Congregations offer vacation Bible school
Vacation Bible school is being offered at area churches:
• Eastgate Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will host “Wilderness Escape,” a week-long vacation Bible School for ages 4 through 12 from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. The program focuses on God’s guidance and care for the Israelites while they journeyed through the wilderness.

• Summit Grove Community of Christ is offering “Jungle Safari” vacation Bible School for ages 3 and older from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 3 through 7. There will be music, snacks, crafts, games and fun.

Community garden on display
St. Paul United Methodist Church invites the community to come see its community garden from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday (July 27).
The garden is at 36th Street and Sterling Avenue in Independence, next to the church, 3601 S. Sterling Ave. Members of the Master Gardeners of Greater Kansas City will be on hand for a in-house garden tour.
The garden is certified as a monarch way station and wildlife habitat and includes a small fruit orchard, herb gardens, a berry garden, insectary gardens and raised beds offering produce for the church’s Wednesday night community meal. Twenty-six plots are available for rent each season to gardeners willing to share the work of maintaining the site.
Rummage sale at Independence First Christian
Independence First Christian Church is holding a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (July 26) in the Fellowship Hall, 125 S. Pleasant St.
The church also is offering a community breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. The cost is $3.50 for either half order of biscuits and gravy or all-you-can-eat pancakes with sausage, and $5 for a full order of biscuits and gravy. All meals include coffee and orange juice.

Summer fest at Unity, Independence
A community summer fest will be held on the Unity of Independence grounds from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday (July 26).
There will a water slide, snacks, raffles, games, Bingo, water obstacle course and live music. Be sure to bring your towel.

Movies are starting point for sermon series
Eastgate Christian Church in Independence will offer a sermon series on religious themes in several classic films through Aug. 24. The sermons will be presented by the Rev. Joshua Patty.
The “Summer Blockbuster Sermon Series” will consider such issues as truth, love, sacrifice, and being a role model. The sermons are:
• Sunday, “The Wizard of Oz,” on how people seek wisdom.
• Aug. 3, “Casablanca,” on the loyalty we owe to others.
• Aug. 10, “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence,” on how we remember history and are guided by it.
• Aug. 17, “Auntie Mame,” an exploration of the example we set in how we live our lives.
• Aug. 24, “Star Wars” concerns the weapons that faith gives us in the battles we face.

Oakland United Methodist to mark 133 years
Oakland United Methodist Church will celebrate 133 years on Sunday (July 27). Instead of the traditional 11 a.m. worship service, a 9 a.m. outdoor homecoming “service-in-song” will be presented by The Circuit Riders, a local men’s harmony group.
Afterward, all are invited to a potluck brunch and a visit in the shade of the cedar trees planted when the church was built.
The church is at 30701 E. Truman Road, near Buckner. The church building was constructed in 1881 on an acre of ground donated by John Van Dyke. Descendants of several early-day families remain a part of the congregation.
‘Bring Forth the Kingdom’
Gail Woodstock will speak on the theme “Bring Forth the Kingdom” at the 10:20 a.m. worship service on Sunday (July 27) at the Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence.

Clothing exchange at Summit Grove Community of Christ
Summit Grove Community of Christ is holding a free clothing exchange from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 2 at the church, 411 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence.

Free health clinic at Glenwood Park UMC
Glenwood Park Methodist Church will hold a free health clinic from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 2.
The church, at 10000 E. 23rd St., Independence, holds the clinics on the first Saturday of the month. The screenings, sponsored by the Black Nurse Association and the Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center, include glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index testing.

Timothy Lutheran School is sponsoring its fifth annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 7 and 8, and 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 9. It’s in church’s Family Life Center, 425 N.W. R.D. Mize Road, Blue Springs.
Sale items include clothes, household items, knick knacks, antique furniture and more, with proceeds going to the scholarship fund.
