An 11-year-old child was killed in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Blue Ridge Boulevard and Sterling Avenue in Independence Friday morning.

Independence Police said a 1996 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and a 2006 Chevrolet Impala collided at 10:20 a.m. The driver of the Silverado was northbound on Sterling Avenue, made a left turn at Blue Ridge Boulevard and struck the Impala heading south on Sterling Avenue; colliding at the intersection.

The Impala had four young passengers, including the 11-year-old, as well as the driver. The driver of the Silverado was the sole occupant of that vehicle. All of them were taken to a local hospital. The 11-year-old passenger of the Impala was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital and police said the victim was unrestrained at the time of the accident. The identity is not being released until all family members are notified.

The crash remains under investigation.

A witness of the accident, who did not want to give her name,  told The Examiner that she believed car wrecks at that intersection are too frequent.

“The speed should be reduced (at the intersection),” she said.
