Both the Blue Springs South High School Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleading squads placed first at the Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association KC Regional Competition at Liberty High School July 19.
BSSHS cheerleading coach Sara Mumaw said her Varsity squad solely competed against defending state champions, Liberty High School, and the JV squad surpassed Raymore-Peculiar, Lee’s Summit West and Blue Springs high schools.
“We have an amazing group of girls,” Mumaw said about her squads. “Eight girls have been with the program all four years of school and parents have really invested into our squads.”
She added that a panel of five judges awarded points to the BSSHS cheerleading squads based on their ability to lead a crowd, energy, tumbling, stunting and motions. A total of 150 points could be earned from each judge, but Mumaw said the lowest and highest scores by two of the five judges are thrown out to eliminate bias. The Varsity squad earned a composite score of 389 points out of 450 points possible.
But this isn’t the last time the 2014 BSSHS Varsity squad will compete against Liberty High School this season. Mumaw added the Varsity squad will face Liberty again at the MCCA State Competition held at University of Missouri’s Hearnes Center in Columbia Oct. 4 and 5.
