  • We have a really great country. Sometimes I'm amazed at how America can stay great when politicians are concentrating on backdoor bills for the big interests who line their pockets. One such bill is the constitutional Amendment 1 referred to as the “right to farm” bill. This constitutional amendment will be on the Aug. 5 ballot along with four other amendments.
The name “right to farm” is misleading. You need to know what you are voting on before you make your decision. The Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation is a brilliant organization that has been fighting for animal rights in Missouri for 24 years. They were instrumental in getting the Canine Cruelty Prevention Act passed, as well at Proposition B.
The current Amendment 1, if passed, could give unscrupulous dog breeders an opportunity to challenge current animal protection laws. Many puppy mill owners will think that this amendment will give them the right to do whatever they want in spite of the Canine Cruelty Prevention Act. You see, for some strange reason, puppy mills have been lumped in with agriculture and farm animals. Do you view your dog or cat as you do an animal headed for the slaughter house? I don't, but our legislators do!
Another strange thing is that farmers have the “right to farm” right now. This legislation doesn't help them! However, it would help the big corporations like Monsanto. Amendment #1 would give big factory farms the right to do what they want. This also means that if GMO crops taint organic crops the organic farmer has no recourse against the GMO farmer. This is not good!
Check this out for yourself at www.sos.mo.gov/elections/2014ballot/HJRNos117.pdf. Big corporations and special interests cannot be allowed to push out family farms. Puppy mill owners cannot not be given the right to abuse and neglect dogs! We have to stand up and do what is right. Please vote no on Amendment 1 and ask your friends and neighbors to as well.
