  • Clothing exchange at Summit Grove Community of Christ
    Summit Grove Community of Christ is holding a free clothing exchange from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 2) at the church, 411 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence.
    Clean, gently used clothing, coats, shoes and more for infants through adults will be available. Clothing donations appreciated, but not required. For more information, call 816-461-4186 and leave a message.
    Vacation Bible school at Summit Grove Community of Christ
    Summit Grove Community of Christ is offering “Jungle Safari” vacation Bible School for ages 3 and older from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. There will be music, snacks, crafts, games and fun. The church is at 411 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence. For more information, call 816-461-4186.
    Free health clinic at Glenwood Park UMC
    Glenwood Park Methodist Church will hold a free health clinic from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday (Aug. 2).
    The church, at 10000 E. 23rd St., Independence, holds the clinics on the first Saturday of the month. The screenings, sponsored by the Black Nurse Association and the Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center, include glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index testing.

    ‘Chuck Wagon’ Cookie orders taken
    St. Matthew United Methodist Church will be taking orders for its “Chuck Wagon Cookies” through Aug. 10.
    Cookies are $2 each. Orders will be available for pick up between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Aug. 30 at the church, 2415 R.D. Mize Road, Independence. Walk-ins for cookies are welcome while supplies last.

    Sermon series: ‘Why Jesus?’
    Pastor Dan McGee will begin a four-week sermon series on “Why Jesus?” beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday (Aug. 3) at Glenview Baptist Church, 3101 Shrank Road, Independence. There will be a group discussion each evening at 5 p.m. about that morning’s message.

    Eastgate Christian Church in Independence continues its sermon series on religious themes in several classic films. The sermons are:

    • Aug. 10, “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence,” on how we remember history and are guided by it.
    • Aug. 17, “Auntie Mame,” an exploration of the example we set in how we live our lives.
    • Aug. 24, “Star Wars” concerns the weapons that faith gives us in the battles we face.

    Chapel Hill Presbyterian looks at Heifer International
    The Chapel Fellowship Group of Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church will hold a session about Heifer International following the Sunday (Aug. 3) worship service at the church, 3108 S.W. U.S. 40, Blue Springs. A short video about this mission project will be shown in Stone Hall.
    The FiT Faith Middle and Senior High Youth Group will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and the annual Youth Movin’ Up Lock-In will be Aug. 15 and 16.

    Timothy Lutheran rummage sale
    Timothy Lutheran School is sponsoring its fifth annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 9. It’s in church’s Family Life Center, 425 N.W. R.D. Mize Road, Blue Springs.
    Sale items include clothes, household items, knick knacks, antique furniture and more, with proceeds going to the scholarship fund.
    Ice cream social at First Christian, Independence
    Independence First Christian Church is holding its fourth annual ice cream social from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 9 at the church, 125 S. Pleasant St. In addition to ice cream, there will be assorted pies, cakes, cookies, drinks and entertainment.

    Sugar Creek United Methodist Church has set its annual ice cream social for Aug. 13 from 3 to 7 p.m., 415 N. Sterling Ave.
    The $4.50 cost includes a bowl of homemade ice cream (vanilla, chocolate or strawberry), cake or pie, and iced tea. Carry outs are welcome. Proceeds benefit the church.
