  • Jet Tryon went to Fargo, North Dakota, last month with high hopes, and he came back home feeling just as well.
The Oak Grove High School junior-to-be placed fifth at 100 pounds in the Junior Greco-Roman Tournament at the prestigious ASICS/Vaughan Fargo Cadet/Junior Nationals over the third weekend of July, then followed it up by placing seventh at 100 pounds in the Junior Freestyle competition to earn a pair of All-American honors.
Tryon was one of the Blue Springs-based MoWest Wrestling Club members who were on Team Missouri, along with Grain Valley sophomore and state tournament runner-up Wolfgang Clapper, who placed eighth at 126 pounds in Cadet Greco-Roman.
In his last Greco-Roman (no wrestling below the waist) match, Tryon eked out a 1-0 decision over JohnPaul Stedwill from Illinois.
“I went in thinking I was pretty capable of placing, and I wrestled confident the whole time,” Tryon said. “I did better than I thought it would go in Greco. Transitioning to freestyle took a little getting used to because before we went to Fargo we had a big Greco training session and hardly did any freestyle. I had to get my mindset right, but I think I still did pretty well.
“Wrestling at big tournaments, then coming back and wrestling the competition here, it kind of gives me an edge. The kids in Fargo, they’re the best in the nation, so I’ll feel pretty confident in the high school season.”
His high school coach, Bobbe Lowe, agreed.
“It’s going to give him a huge confidence boost,” said Lowe, who also coaches with MoWest and got to see Tryon in Fargo. “Even though it’s a different style, it’s still training and competing. Everything he’s gotten so far, he’s earned it.”
Tryon fell a match short of qualifying for the Missouri state tournament at 113 pounds last season. He had been beaten for Oak Grove’s 106-pound slot by Connor Brown, who went on to win state.
Besides Tryon and Clapper, a third MoWest wrestler, Warrensburg’s Collin Braun, also placed at Fargo, taking eighth at 285 pounds in Junior Greco-Roman.
They were among 14 individuals from Team Missouri who placed, including champions Ethan Karsten (Platte County) and Blake Clevenger (Kearney).
