Community Services League is offering to fulfill virtually all of a child’s school supply list this back-to-school season.
CSL President and CEO Doug Cowan said if a student’s family registers with the organization by calling 816-254-4100 and meets certain income guidelines and residency requirements, they may be eligible to receive a variety of free school supplies.
“We are willing to visit with any family who is in need,” he said.
The school supply giveaway is open to all K-12 grade level students from Grain Valley to Independence. CSL offices throughout Eastern Jackson County will be furnishing school supplies based on a family’s residence. Each office will serve as a distribution center and each one has a different main distribution date. Cowan said there are three CSL distribution sites that coincide with CSL’s offices in Independence where families can obtain needed school supplies, once registered: 800 South Hardy Avenue, phone number 816-254-0446; 404 North Noland Road, 816-254-4100; and 14506 E. 39th Street South (Christ United Methodist Church), 816-254-8209.
Also, if a family in need is located outside of Independence, the CSL offices in Blue Springs and Grain Valley are providing school supplies as well. The Blue Springs location is at 220 S.W. 10th Street, 816-229-0033; and the Grain Valley office at 207 W. Walnut St., 816-355-0328.
“We can fulfill about 90 percent of what a list is requesting,” Cowan said.
Despite the Target store at 17810 E. 39th Street in Independence and Office Products Alliance at the Independence Square helping out with CSL’s school supply effort by allowing them to purchase items on wholesale, Cown says his organization is still in need of particular school supply items.
“We’re always needing backpacks, notebook paper and three-ring binders.”
