A Shawnee, Kansas, man died early Wednesday morning in a brief police chase.

Police have not yet identified the 21-year-old man but said there were felony warrants for his arrest.

The incident started around 1:20 a.m. An Independence police officer spotted a silver Dodge Stratus near 35th Street Terrace and Pittman Road, a high-crime area, and considered the car suspicious.

“We’ve asked officers as much as we can to go to that area,” Police Department Spokesman Tom Gentry said.

The car’s license plate light was out, and the officer was having trouble getting the license number to check. At Pittman and U.S. 40, the officer turned on his lights to have the car pull over.

The car took off at a high speed, down Pittman. At about 45th Street, the officer found the car to have gone down an embankment and flipped over. There also was a small fire.

The driver died. A passenger, a 33-year-old woman from Mayview, Missouri, was injured.

Kansas City police are investigating the accident.
