He is flaming out quickly in his own party. In 2013 a Rasmussen poll found that 51 percent of voters found the Speaker of the House John Boehner from Ohio was the most disliked member of congressional leadership. A year later another Rasmussen poll again showed Boehner as the overall most unpopular leader in Congress, surpassing even House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, who had long held that title. Just 26 percent of U.S. voters have at least a somewhat favorable opinion of Boehner, while 60 percent view him unfavorably.

His refusal to place any immigration reform before the House has created another firestorm even among Republicans, as evidenced by a Fox News headline – “Fox News poll: Voters to Congress – Do something! Anything! on Immigration.”

“By a more than three-to-one margin,” Fox reports, “voters would pick immigration reform that only includes a pathway to citizenship over no Congressional action at all – if those were the only two options on the table.”

Forget immigration reform. House Republicans had other fish to fry – President Obama. They authorized Boehner to sue Obama on a complaint that he had overstepped his legal executive authority on the Affordable Care Act. Then they went on a five-week recess.

Five Republicans joined Democrats in voting against pursuing the lawsuit. No Democrats voted to move forward with the suit. Democrats say the lawsuit has no standing and will cost the taxpayers money. Further, it is fodder for the GOP base during the mid-term election.

Further, some liberal organizations such as Daily Kos have picked up the gauntlet by circulating a petition to have Boehner fired. Daily Koz argues that Boehner’s sad list of accomplishments includes shutting down the government, nearly defaulting on the debt and destroying the economy, and suing Obama. They say 54 percent of Americans oppose the lawsuit.

Its petition reads: “The American people are tired of your ‘leadership.’ You have failed at basic governance and you have the gall to sue President Obama because of it? On behalf of all Americans, we’re sick of it and we’re not going to stop until you’re beat in November.”

Polls find President Obama with only a 46 percent approval rating while congressional approval ratings hover between 13 and 20 percent. What America is sick of is Washington gridlock – period.

I give you President John Adams’ toast: Independence forever.
