Independence police are seeking a suspect who shot a woman during an armed robbery at an Independence insurance office Wednesday afternoon.

Independence Police responded to the call at 1:59 p.m. Wednesday and said a man walked into the Dingeldein Insurance Group building at 16012 E. 23rd Street and "talked for a minute, pulled out a gun and demanded money," according to Independence police spokesperson Tom Gentry.

A woman with the insurance agency did not comply with the suspect's demands, Gentry said, and was shot as a result. Police said the female victim's injuries were non-life threatening, and she was taken to a local hospital.

According to police, the suspect ran out of the insurance office's front door and headed west. He then ran north on South Trail Ridge Drive, where he was last seen.

Police described the suspect as a black male in his 40s or 50s who is about 6 feet tall and had a speech impediment. He wore a baseball cap, sunglasses, khaki pants and a dark blue shirt with the word "ALLERGEN" imprinted on the front of it.

Police are asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of this armed robbery suspect or information on the crime to call 911 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
