One bad inning cost the Blue Springs softball team the championship of the 10th annual Joplin Paige Neal/Christina Freeman Tournament.

Staley solved Alexis Reid for four runs on five hits and a Blue Springs error for four first-inning runs and held on for a 4-3 victory in Saturday’s finals. Staley managed only one hit after that.

Erin Keeney hit a two-run homer, Brittani Reid singled and doubled and Darian Frost singled twice as Blue Springs’ comeback bid fell short.

“At different times we had a runner on third with one out and popped up six times,” Blue Springs coach Roger Lower said. “We had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh inning.

“But we trying to find out a lot of things about our team,” he added of the tournament showing. “We wanted to look at a lot of different spots. Offensively, we are not very good.”

Blue Springs (5-1), which finished 4-1 in the tournament, earned a berth in the finals with a 7-0 victory over Columbia Rock Bridge. Reid pitched a one-hitter and struck out four. Morgan McMahan hit a three-run, first-inning homer and Frost singled twice with two RBIs.
