It took a while for the Blue Springs South boys soccer team to shake the rust off.

But then the Jaguars cruised to a 2-0 road victory over Park Hill Monday night in their season opener.

“The first 10 minutes was typical first-game stuff but we started to settle down after that,” Jaguars coach Jon Grice said. “In the second half, we really stepped it up and played well.”

Senior midfielder Matthew Rockwell scored in the 31st minute on an assist from Jared Ray to make it 1-0 at halftime.

Senior midfielder Kyle Findley added an insurance goal in the 50th minute on another assist from Ray before the game was suspended for a while by lightning in the 56th minute.

“We have three returning senior midfielders in Matthew, Jake Shireman and Kyle, and they did a great job controlling the field tonight,” Grice said. “And I was really proud of our backline tonight. Our two centerbacks (Bryce Childers and Luke Vaughn) and our new goalkeeper (Patrick Elliott) did a great job.”

Elliott made six saves for the shutout. The Jaguars outshot the Trojans 12-6 on goal.

The junior varsity teams played to a 1-1 tie.
