Four Missouri Comets players, along with Coach Vlatko Andonovski, have been nominated by the Major Arena Soccer League for major year-end awards.
Leo Gibson, Brian Harris and John Sosa, who all received first-team MASL honors earlier this week, and second-team goalkeeper Danny Waltman are among the nominees for major individual player awards. The winners of the Most Valuable Player, Goalkeeper of the Year, Defender of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year awards will be announced at a press conference the week of the Ron Newman Cup Final.
Forward Leo Gibson, who led the league with 48 goals, 45 assists and 93 total points, and also had the single-game high of 12 points, is up for the Most Valuable Player award along with the San Diego Sockers’ Kraig Chiles and Oxford City FC's Lucas Totti.
Chiles was third in scoring with 45 goals and 17 assists, including 10 hat tricks. Totti was second among rookies with 55 points (30 goals, 25 assists).
Waltman led the league’s goalies with a 17-0 record and also allowed just 4.83 goals per game. Other Goalkeeper of the Year nominees are the San Diego Sockers’ Chris Toth (12-3, 4.58 GAA) and the Baltimore Blast’s William Vanzela (14-2, 4 shutouts, 2.83 GAA)
Harris (23 goals, 13 assists, 18 blocked shots) and Sosa (13 goals, 24 assists, 14 blocks) are among the finalists for Defender of the Year, along with the Blast’s Pat Healey (7 goals, 22 assists, league-high 53 blocked shots)
Andonovski guided the Comets to a 20-0 record a year after leading the team to the last MISL Championship, and in between he piloted FC Kansas City to the National Women’s Soccer League title.
Other Coach of Year finalists are Bernie Lilavois, who led the Ontario Fury to a 13-7 record after they went 5-11 last season, and Giuliano Oliviero, who led the Milwaukee Wave to a 13-7 mark in his first season succeeding coaching legend Keith Tozar.
Rookie of the Year finalists are Totti, Gordy Gurson from the St. Louis Ambush and Onua Obasi from the Baltimore Blast.
