  • Look! Up in the sky! It's a totally adorable bird! It's a cutesy-wutesy plane! No, it's The Powerpuff Girls, and the teensy-weensy superheroes are coming back to Cartoon Network.
The network is bringing back Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup for an all-new series in 2016, Cartoon Network chief content officer Rob Sorcher announced Monday at the 2014 Licensing Expo in Las Vegas.

"The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide," Sorcher said in a statement. "We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice, and Chemical X."
The Powerpuff Girls, about three little girls who used their superpowers to regularly save the city of Townsville, was created by Craig McCracken and aired 78 episodes from 1998 to 2005. The series won a pair of Emmys for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation and is regarded as one of Cartoon Network's most successful original properties with more than $2.5 billion in retail sales since its debut.

No further details about the new show were revealed, but Cartoon Network did air a one-off special The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed that was heavily CG'd in January.
