The Truman Heartland Community Foundation awarded nearly $185,000 from 12 of its endowments through the Community Grants Program this week.

During Thursday’s Community Grants Luncheon, 55 nonprofits received financial support – in spite of a difficult economic climate, according to a press release issued by the foundation.

“For many nonprofit organizations, 2009 has been a tough year in raising support for their charitable missions,” according to Nicole Stevens, director of Marketing & Communications for the Truman Heartland Community Foundation

“In the face of a ‘down economy’ many donors, corporations, and foundations throughout the United States have had to make cutbacks in spending… and giving,” Stevens said.

Among those Eastern Jackson County recipients include:

n The Palmer Center in Independence received $2,000.

n The committee for The Wall That Heals, a Vietnam Wall replica scheduled to be in Blue Springs from Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 2010,  received $2,500.

n The Blue Springs School of Economics received $2,168.

n The Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation received $3,450.

n The Sunshine Center in Independence received $1,500.

n The Eastern Jackson County office for Cancer Action received $5,000.

n The St. Mary’s Medical Center Foundation received $2,000.

n StandUp Blue Springs received $5,450.
