Sonic Drive-Ins in Independence and Grain Valley have moved a step closer to being named the best in the nation.
The Sonics at 4001 S. Jackson Drive in Independence and 706 Main St. in Grain Valley have completed the first round of competition in the Dr Pepper Sonic games contest, earning the status of the top 10 percent in the nation. The two local Sonics advanced by completing multiple choice quizzes and by their performance as judged by unannounced “mystery shoppers” who reported the staffs’ service skills.
This year, 2,700 drive-ins throughout the country are competing in several categories, including food delivery, drink preparation, service delivery and food preparation. The final 12 teams will compete in nationals Sept. 15 and 16 in Palmetto, Fla.
