Dale Brendel, The Examiner’s longtime executive editor, has been promoted to a new position, general manager of The Leavenworth Times.
Like The Examiner, the newspaper in Leavenworth, Kan., is owned by GateHouse Media of Fairport, N.Y.
Brendel, a former Examiner sports editor, has been executive editor of The Examiner since 1999. The Examiner has been named the GateHouse Media National Newspaper of the Year Runnerup and Finalist, respectively, the last two years. The Examiner has also won the General Excellence Award, the highest honor from the Missouri Press Association, four of the last 10 years in its circulation category.
“It is with sadness that I am leaving The Examiner and my hometown community, but this an exciting challenge and opportunity for me,” said Brendel, a Fort Osage High School graduate. “I am leaving The Examiner in good hands, and I know the staff will continue to strive for new and better ways to cover and deliver local news and sports information to the community.“
Longtime Examiner editor Sheila Davis is the managing editor and will be directing the newsroom.
Examiner publisher Steve Curd was recently given the added duty of publisher in Leavenworth, and he then named Brendel to his new position.
“The majority of my time will still be spent at The Examiner,” Curd said. “With Dale in charge in Leavenworth, I have complete confidence that things will progress nicely at that newspaper. Dale is a newspaper veteran, and I have complete confidence in him. I will spend one day a week in Leavenworth and four days at The Examiner.”
