Dollar General posts higher profits
Dollar General has reported higher profits for the second quarter.
The discount retailer, based in Goodlettsville, Tenn., has more than 9,100 stores in 35 states, including 12 in Eastern Jackson County among is 334 in Missouri.
The company reported a net income of $141.2 million, or 41 cents a share, for the 13 weeks ending July 30. That includes a $6.4 million loss from early repayment of some long-term obligations. Not counting that, earnings would have been $145.1 million, or 42 cents a share, compared with $93.6 million, or 29 cents a share, in the same quarter of 2009.
Sales were 10.8 percent higher, $3.21 billion, and gross profit was 32.2 percent of sales. Same-store sales were 5.2 percent higher. Overall sales are up 11.3 percent for the last 26 weeks, thanks largely to the company’s continued opening of new stores. It’s opening about 600 stores this year and remodeling about 500.
